If you’re a bird watcher, and have always fantasized about going to the Galapagos, Punta Pitt is where you want to be. You will quite literally have to step around blue-footed boobie nesting on the trail. But, first, you have to get to the trail!
7:30am – Meet at Pier, to take a water taxi to the boat.
7:45-9:30am – 2 hour boat journey where we relax on the sundeck whilst enjoying complimentary drinks/snacks.
9:30-11:30am – Land at Punta Pitt, where our naturalist guide leads us through a 2 hour hiking trail that ascends to the top of a volcanic tuff hill passing through several natural viewpoints.
As mentioned, this is the trail for bird lovers, or simply those who have spent many years in school learning about Darwinism and boobies endemic to Galapagos. This is the only site in the Galapagos Islands where you can see all three species of boobies (Nazca, blue-footed and red-footed) and two species of frigates nesting in the same area.
Speaking of Darwinism, fun fact about Nazca boobies: the mother lays 2 eggs, and it is mandatory that one chick kicks the other chick out of the nest, to therefore obtain more food from their parents, and increase their chance of survival. Siblicide, not only seen on soap operas 🙂
We caught incredible close-ups of all three species of boobies, what an experience!
11:30am – After returning from the hike, we say a quick hello to the sea lions playing on the beach and get picked up by the boat.
12 – Lunch is served! Chicken and rice, avocado/tomato/cucumber salad, plantains, coke/water, fruit, and cake. Delicious and nutritious!
12:30pm – Suit up! Don’t worry, no suits and ties here, just wetsuits. We hop into the ocean and spend the next hour snorkeling with sea lions and learning the names of far too many species of fish to remember.
1:30pm – Tea/Coffee, fruit, and cake while we cruise the 2 hours back to the pier.
3:30pm – Return to the pier, return our gear, and load our pictures!
