Getting to the Galapagos is no easy or cheap endeavor. But once you´re here, there’s no better way to see the islands and local wildlife (as well as continue spending a little money) than by going on a tour.
One of the 6 day tours offered from San Cristobal island is to Española Island. This is the oldest island on the archipelago and is best known for its population of albatross, boobies, and of course, sea lions, marine iguanas, and turtles. An absolute must visit for bird watchers.
Here´s a glimpse of what awaits you on this fabulous tour:
7:30am – day starts nice and early with a 2 hour boat ride from San Cristobal, to Española. Lovely dolphins accompanied us the first several minutes, jumping in and out of the water as we got to know our fellow passengers and crew on deck.
9:30am – suit up! We all put on our wetsuits and hop into the water to snorkel amongst turtles, fish (my favorite was the large and colorful parrotfish), sea urchins, starfish, and we found a lobster hidden amongst the rocks!
10:30am -Snack time! Tea, coffee, and pastries to warm our bones.
11:30am – Lunch! Early bird special of ceviche (que rico!), plantains, rice, vegetables, and apples for dessert. Delicious and nutritious!
Noon – 2 hour guided hike (in both English and Spanish) through the island. Here we saw a “mess” (groups) of marine iguanas, sea lions (mum and pup, too cute), sea lions playing with iguanas, the famous Boobie and Albatross birds, a hawk, and the Española blow hole – a very impressive display of the power and force of water!
2pm – Snack time part 2! Chocolate cake, watermelon, and more apples!
2:30 – 2 hour boat ride back to town
